In addition to the A&E's freight operations in Central Pennsylvania due to our trackage rights agreement with Norfolk Southern, we also run passenger excursion trains in Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, New York, New England, and British Columbia in the Dominion of Canada.  Our passenger operations are unique in that we have our own insurance system that is independent of Amtrak and the host railroad.  One of our most iconic excursion routes in New England is along the Green Mountain Railroad.  Railfans who know their history will know that this iconic line was once utilized by the late F. Nelson Blount for his Steamtown USA excursions from Riverside Station in Bellows Falls, Vermont to Chester, Vermont.  Our trains occasionally run from Rutland to Bellows Falls and return on that stretch of track--which is kept in immaculate condition.  The consist for most of our excursions in New England is generally made up of our coaches painted in N&W-style maroon with gold trim, and our motive power is usually one or two of the three former Canadian Pacific G5 Pacifics that are on the A&E's roster.  Incidentally, during the days they were owned by Steamtown USA, the 1246, 1278, and 1293 all operated along this route at one time or another until Steamtown relocated to Scranton to become Steamtown National Historic Site.  Another line that our excursions run over is the Norfolk Southern Buffalo Line between Machias, New York and Driftwood, Pennsylvania that was once the Pennsylvania Railroad's main line to Buffalo, New York--hence the name, "Buffalo Line."  Although this portion of the Buffalo Line is owned by Norfolk Southern, the Western New York & Pennsylvania Railroad (reporting mark WNYP) has leased and has been operating this portion of this very scenic route since 2007, and both NS and the WNYP have been VERY accommodating when it comes to running excursions over the line.  However, the WNYP is also home to a VERY formidable adversary on their main line: the notorious Keating Summit Grade.  At 8 miles long and with grades nearing 3% on the Northbound journey to Machias and the Southbound return trip to Driftwood, trains struggle over this MONGREL of a hill to get from Machias to Driftwood and vice versa.  When steam excursions run over this portion of the Buffalo Line, I'm sorry to say that diesel assistance is a must.  That reason is because of the stiff grade which requires a little extra "oomph" in regards to additional pulling power for climbing the hill and additional braking power for the descent down the other side.  There is a permanent 10-mph slow order on the 2% downward slope between Keating Summit itself and nearby Emporium, Pennsylvania.  During our excursions on the line, it's not uncommon to see two of the WNYP's ex-Cartier Railway Montreal Locomotive Works (MLW) M636 diesel locomotives coupled up behind the steam locomotive's auxiliary water tender and helping said locomotive up Keating Summit Grade.  When I first encountered that grade, I had my doubts at first, but I prayed to God and hoped for a miracle that we would get over Keating Summit without incident.  Fortunately, we did, and we suffered no significant delays.  There are two wye junctions that our excursion trains utilize on these trips.  Those are the wye in Olean, New York where our Northbound trips terminate, and the other wye is 16 miles from Driftwood in nearby Keating.  Granted, the Olean wye has a bit of a sharp curvature on both the North and South legs, but we do our best to make it work.  We pride ourselves in not having suffered a single derailment on any of our excursions.  Generally, the A&E will entrust these trips to either Nickel Plate Road 759; Reading 2100; one or two of our ex-Canadian Pacific G5 Pacifics; G3 Pacific 2317 and H1b "Empress" 2816 in unison; our two Chinese ex-Iowa Interstate QJs (Not to brag, but these two powerhouses can easily muscle the train over Keating Summit without diesel assistance.); or even Frisco 1522.  Another route that we run excursions on is the Kettle Valley Railway that we fully restored to operation through a partnership with the Kettle Valley Steam Railway; Canadian National Railway; Canadian Pacific Railway; and Transport Canada.  The restoration of this scenic 400-mile or 650-kilometer line in British Columbia saw the KVSR trackage rebuilt to Class 1 railroad standards, and it also saw several wooden trestles replaced with the steel variants to accommodate heavier diesel locomotives and freight cars in the event CP had to utilize the route as a secondary main line.  This also saw the five tunnel roofs raised in anticipation of double stack container trains and excess height cars, and each pre-existing steel bridge was strengthened as well to be on the safe side.  Motive power for the 400-mile/650-kilometer line consists of former Canadian Pacific 2-8-0 N2C Consolidation #3716 (which also runs on the real life Kettle Valley Steam Railway); a trio of former Canadian Pacific 2-8-2 Mikados (P2e #5361; semi-streamlined P2h #5433; and semi-streamlined P2k #5468); a handful of ex-CP SD40-2 diesels; and an MLW RS-3 duo.  Top speed for this line is no faster than 40 miles per hour due to the mountainous terrain.  One of the more recent routes that the A&E has recently helped to rebuild and run trips on is the former Pennsylvania-Reading-Seashore Lines' main line to Cape May, New Jersey.  Today, it is owned by New Jersey Transit and leased to the Cape May Seashore Lines.  With financial backing from New Jersey Transit's board of directors, work began almost immediately three years ago to upgrade the roadbed with new ballast; replacing the rotted wooden crossties with newer concrete crossties; replacing the whole of the railroad's jointed rail with heavy continuous welded rail to allow for speeds up to 60 miles an hour in places; and replacing older railroad bridges with newer variations.  Throughout the project, we had all agreed that it would be best to work South from Tuckahoe to Cape May City, and that worked out splendidly.  It should go without saying that rebuilding the whole route was VERY difficult, and nowhere was that more apparent than when the time came to replace the Cape May Canal swing bridge last year.  This was easily the most difficult part of the entire operation because a good portion of the bridge's superstructure had rusted through, and this made removal of the bridge rather risky.  Nevertheless, we managed to lift it off with two strong floating cranes on barges, and the old span was subsequently cut up for scrap before being hauled off in tiny bits in the back of an impressive convoy of dump trucks.  Design work on a replacement span had already begun when work to rebuild the line started three years ago, and we all agreed that a lift span was needed.  It actually took about six months because most of the new lift bridge was prefabricated at an offsite location and brought in on barges.  Once the new bridge was in, we focused our attention on the last dash into Cape May.  As it was from the 1950's until the mid- to late-1960's, Budd RDCs are the norm on this line, but steam power sometimes runs to Cape May City.  Due to the lack of a runaround track, it's not uncommon for the steam engine to trail out of Cape May with a diesel pulling the train back to Tuckahoe, but that only occurs on one of the Cape May Seashore Lines' "Steam Weekend" events that we do throughout the year.  More info is still to come in the future, so stay tuned.

*song starts*

[Madeline]

I know you see
Somehow the world will change for me
And be so wonderful

[Yvette]
Here I am once again
Feeling lost but now and then

[Madeline]
Live life, breathe air

[Madeline and Chloe]
I know somehow we're gonna get there
And feel so wonderful

[Yvette & Nona]
When you figure out how
You're lost in the moment, you disappear

[Madeline, Chloe, Edd, & Eddy]
It's all for real

[Madeline & Yvette]
I'm tellin' you just how I feel

[Yvette, Nicole, & Nona]
You don't have to be afraid to put your dreams in action
You're never gonna fade you'll be the main attraction

[Madeline, Madeline, Pepito & Ed]
Wake up the members of my nation
It's your time to be

[Yvette, (Edd & Eddy)]
Not a fantasy (Not a fantasy)
Just remember me (Just remember me)

[Yvette & Madeline, (Max, Danielle & Chloe)]
When it turns out right (When it turns out right)

[Madeline]
'Cause there's no chance unless you take one

[Madeline, Ed, Edd, & Eddy]
And the time to see

[Yvette & (Max)]
Now if you live your imagination (Yeah, yeah)

[Yvette, Danielle & Chloe]
Tomorrow you'll be everybody's fascination

[Madeline, Max & Nicole]
See the brighter side of every situation

[Yvette & (Nona)]
In my victory (In my victory)

[Yvette and Madeline]
Just remember me

[Yvette]
When I make it shine

Family Reprise

1 min read
Madeline: Arms to warm me when I'm cold,
Lips that smile and never scold,
Ears that listen,
Hands that hold,
My friends are just like family!
All: Family!
Nicole: The ones who wipe your tears when you feel small.
All: Family!
Fifi: The ones who'll always be there when you call.
All: Family!
Chloe: The ones who truly love you most of all.
Madeline: My friends are just like family!
All: Our friends are just like family!

Christopher Plummer (Narrator): Madeline has friends and family galore.  And, that's all there is.  There isn't any more.

(Just the lyrics from the reprise of "Family" from the 1999 movie, "Madeline: Lost in Paris."  This song is performed by Madeline, the other 11 girls, and the lace shop girls.  As for Mr. Plummer's line, well that's the ending quote of the movie.  A very heartwarming song to end a very heartwarming movie.  Now in the words of Mr. Plummer, "That's all there is.  There isn't any more.")

She's a really useful girl, you know,
Everyone in Paris will tell you so.
She laughs and runs and sings,
Rushing to and fro,
She's the really useful girl that we adore!

She's the one,
She's the one,
She's the really useful girl that we adore!
She's the one,
She's the number one,
The smallest Madeline!

She's a really useful girl, you know,
Cause Lord Cucuface, he told her so,
Now she's got a family,
To call her very own,
She's the really useful girl that we adore!

She's the one,
She's the one,
She's the really useful girl that we adore!
She's the one,
She's the number one,
The smallest Madeline!

Brave little girl, she's always there,
Whenever you need a hand,
If you need help,
With a situation,
Who comes into mind?

She's the one,
She's the one,
She's the really useful girl that we adore!
She's the one,
She's the number one,
The smallest Madeline!

She's a really useful girl, you know,
Maybe little, but she's never slow,
Stand back in amazement,
Just you watch her go,
She's the really useful girl that we adore!

She's the one,
She's the one,
She's the really useful girl that we adore!
She's the one,
She's the number one,
The smallest Madeline!
She's the really useful girl that we adore!

(This is what happens when you watch both "I'm Madeline" and "He's A Really Useful Engine."  Some of you might think it's weird.  As for me, I think what I wrote is kinda cute.  Besides, I always wanted a Thomas & Friends/Madeline crossover.  I might record this into a song.  Madeline is owned by the late Ludwig Bemelmans, and Thomas & Friends is owned by Mattel Creations.  I OWN AND REGRET NOTHING!)
